Tree Studies

These mystical and visionary sketches, from a notebook, are the combination of studies by the artist, compositions and writings from imagination and direct observation. The artist is 19 at the time and greatly influenced by mystical artists and writers, and the naive. These ideals are transfered to his paintings. After his death this is the only early sketchbook to survive destruction by his son, to protect his father's reputation as a landscape painter. Early to mid 1800s. England.

Brown ink, graphite, and watercolour.

Artist: Samuel Palmer.
