This Arctic sketchbook is a record of the activities and sightings of the trip by the English navy by one of its members, George Back. He draws boats and seas, the native people they meet, the boats they travel in, coastlines and landscapes, and details in sketches of plants and animals circa early 1800s (period of imperialism). On the watercolour sky study below the artist makes extensive notes on colours.

Pencil on wove paper, and watercolour over pencil, and scrapes on wove paper.
