Sketchbooks can capture changes in thought, and seeing, over the years. As seen here, A.Y. Jackson's later winter sketch in Canada, 1928, and from earlier sketchbook (academic) studies while in Europe, 1909.

Best known in Canada as a member of the modernist Group of 7 painters, 1917-1931, Jackson studied art in Chicago and Paris before the first world war.
